Taste of Home's Soft Orange Custard! |
I love custards. They remind me of growing up. My mom used to make something called Junkett Rennet Custard in flavors like chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry. We loved it. I used to make baked egg custards for my own children when they were young. Custard pie, and coconut custard pie, rank right up there among desserts I MUST have if they are on the menu! Custards also remind me of a stand that we'd stop at near the Catskill Game Farm where soft-serve was then "frozen custard." It was always something when my Dad would go up to the window and order 9 cones! A good 50-plus years later (yikes!), I still remember the cool, rich, creaminess of that frozen custard. Most people probably remember family outings by location or event -- I remember the foods we ate (big shocker!)...
I haven't tried this recipe yet, but it has good reviews, and the photo (from Taste of Home's site) is just soooo pretty! I think that alone provides all the credibility necessary for my recommendation to you. What a lovely dessert it would be for company, or just you!

Thanks Mary Ellen - it just feels better!
DeleteLike the color change! Much softer than the green. I also remember getting soft custard, after a long hot day at the game farm...oh so long ago....thanks for the memory

Cindy - so glad you remember that frozen custard stand too! I always looked forward to that at the end of our trips to the Catskill Game Farm!
DeleteIt will come as no surprise to you Jeannie, that I am also a lover of all things custard(y). Tapioca (which you have made for me on many occasions, flan, creme brulee, pudding...there is simply something so comforting in the silkiness of that type of dessert. You've got me wishing for a big bowl of something right now! Here's to custard!
ReplyDeleteYes, Diane, we custard-lovers are a loyal bunch, and are happy to include all the custard cousins! Creme brulee is my absolute favorite dessert to have out. Maybe we need to make this orange custard and have a girls' dessert night in!
DeleteLove the new look and I really want to apply for the job of "taste tester" of all things made by you.
ReplyDeleteJoanne, you can be my taste-tester any time!
DeleteLove the new look of the blog!
ReplyDeleteThanks Kim - it really does refresh my blogging spirit!
DeleteJeannie, just noticed the new font you used for your "Adirondack Baker" blog title too! Love it! Goes perfect with the new color design! Happy Baking! Carol
ReplyDeleteThanks Carol, I thought it looked more like it's written in icing! I like the more whimsical feel of this template, but I will probably experiment with more. Looking for something a little more professional but still welcoming, ultimately. Hope you have a GREAT weekend - can't wait to see what you put up on your next blog!
ReplyDeleteLove the swirls! Yep, gotta love a good custard. My mom made the best! Tapioca is my most favorite. I recall a wonderful sister-in-law making me a full quart of it and bringing to the hospital when Roddy was born. LOL It was the yummy! Thanks Jeanne for the memory update and the tapioca too!Lynn
